Gracious God, we come before you in the heaviness of this hour with our hearts darkened and our minds numb. Words are wanting and anemic. Hear then the silent cry of our souls.
We who have walked in freedom’s sacred space--spared from horrific acts experienced in countries afar--now taste what they have tasted. In this sanctuary dedicated to the pursuit of peace, reconciliation and healing of the spirit, remind us once again of your abiding presence.
Be with those, this very hour, who put life and limb at risk for others.
Be with those countless loved ones whose lives from this moment are irrevocably changed.
Be with those who seek to protect and preserve.
Be with those who this very minute extend their skills to help and heal.
Be with those in positions of leadership that they may be graced by your compassion and your wisdom.
And yes, be also with those who planned and executed this act--for though our minds may rage against them--they are also your children.
Be with us, for this tragedy belongs to each soul here, separated yet strangely united to the voices and picture portrayed before us.
Bless us now in this nation’s, ...this world’s, hour of need in the name of He who died and rose for all.
Amen.
