		After his brother was shot, and the mob burst through the door of the bedroom, Joseph started toward the window, possibly looking for some way to escape. But the first shot toward Joseph rang out from the mob outside the jail. It came through the window, and struck him in the chest. The group behind him fired and struck him in the back. The force of the shot and the momentum of his body caused Joseph to burst through the second story window. He fell dead on the stone pavement below. A wounded John Taylor took refuge under the bed until the mobbers fled. Willard Richards survived unscathed.
