Community of Christ Temple
The Community of Christ Temple in Independence, Missouri was completed in September 1992 and dedicated during the church's World Conference in April 1994 in fulfilment of Joseph Smith Jr.'s vision of a temple built in an area designated as the "Centerplace" for the church. It is dedicated to the pursuit of peace. A prayer for peace is offered daily at 12:30 p.m. in the temple sanctuary.

Temple Ministries sponsor many activities dedicated to the pursuit of peace. One such activity is the Children's Peace Pavilion which through play and educational experiences encourages grade school children to explore the personal traits of peaceful behavior.

Each year, the Temple Peace Center hosts a Peace Colloquy and honors a recipient for achievements in the field of international peace.

Temple background: In 1831, Joseph Smith Jr. looked over the countryside when he arrived as a member of the fourteen missionary teams he organized. After taking an ax and cutting a path into the wooded area, he found the place for the city and temple. He laid a stone at the northeast corner in the name of the Lord Jesus of Nazareth. He marked a tree with "T" for temple, and "ZOM" standing for Zion.

Edward Partidge later negotiated with land owner J. Hoy Flournoy to purchase a little over 63 acres of land in the immediate area.

The Flournoy home has been preserved and moved to a different location. The original location of the Flournoy home was at the far end of what is now the Community of Christ Temple parking lot.   - Photo by Harry Barth.
